All of the modern technology is all converged on a single thing – Mobile Phones! Email, web browsing document viewing, etc . have been incorporated into so many features that one doesn’t even count them as a premium feature anymore. With the ever so expanding field of possibilities you can do with your mobile and tablet, we bring you a useful app that adds value to your handset.
The Hindustan Times Mobile Application (titled mPaper) is a lightweight application that is downloaded to your phone’s mobile and delivers the latest news and stories to you when you’re on the move! I have been using this application for about a month now and it has recently been upgraded which further improves its performance and usability. It is customizable as per your preferences and you can select from an array of sections which in turn are customizable into categories you wish to view on your app’s home page.
The sections on offer are – news entertainment, entertainment & lifestyle column & blogs and education. I’ll pick the most-used section for this review: The News Section. The app segregates news items into tabs including headlines as well as national news, global news including sport, city-specific (Delhi & Mumbai) and business. You can choose the tabs which you want to receive refreshed content for.
The news stories updation is relatively frequent, which makes the content fairly current. You can choose to clicking on the news item that you want to learn more about which opens up the full story. It also includes a news ticker scrolling to the top of the screen that shows the most relevant and up-to-date news headlines. Additionally, you can let your app run in the background and are able to scroll the ticker on the home screen of your phone that displays the latest news.
Although the app has gone through an update and is better than its predecessor, there are some bugs that need focus to resolve. To start with, although the news is fairly current, it does not compare to real-time news stories that are accessible via mobile enabled websites of leading news agencies. The news ticker, in particular, must be updated often to be relevant to you home screens. Additionally, the app is left running in the background for automatic update of the news feeds consumes a lot of battery backup and exhausts it at a much more rapid speed. Again, for the app to be useful for auto-retrieval and a home screen ticker, it needs to be able to make it less heavy on battery usage. Also, a bit more appealing design could be beneficial to an otherwise useful and innovative product. I would rate the app 2.5/5 in its version as it is – a product worth trying.
